Festive Fevers
Happy Holidays from Italy! After a very long journey, we arrived in Rome on Monday. Rome is the eternal city and easily one of my favorite places in the world. Part of this because I was lucky enough to spend two months here as a student teacher back in 2001. The city has so much character and so many grand sites. Literally around every corner is something amazing to see. Yes, there is a littering and graffiti problem, but it is easy to look past that. We have been able to a bit of exploring despite two jet lagged, sick children. We are mastering the art of slow travel or "one a day" so that Amelia and Bryce are not miserable as we rush from place to place. The weather is cold and that also plays a factor when you have two little ones with fevers and barking coughs. But a little fresh air new hurts, especially if you are in Rome...

Can I have another "stone?"
More weekend baking for us...this was our first time to make scones. Amelia called them, "stones," and Bryce, "cones," but I just called them delicious. We enjoyed them with some artisan jam from Bali I had received as a holiday gift from a student. Yum!

Feeling Festive...It's December 1st
Yesterday we decorated the Christmas tree, hung strings of lights on the windows and of course put up Jim's childhood Advent calendar. Last year I adopted an idea to replace candies or treats with experiences that led to lovely family memories. It was such a wonderful way to count down to Christmas that we decided it needed to be a family tradition. As much as we love chocolate, we would much rather savor sweet memories together than 25 sugary treats.
On each number is a rolled up piece of paper that tells the daily count down activity.
Today was...
And so we got out our glue sticks, sequins, googly eyes, and pom poms...
After all that hard work it was time for some fun!
on the Jungle Jim!
Check back for more Advent posts later this week!
Do You Know The Muffin Man?
This weekend Amelia and I decided to make oatmeal mango muffins by simply substituting mashed mango for the banana in this recipe. (Mangoes at this time of year are simply incredible. They are so rich and delicious and soon to be out of season due to the heavy rains.) Just as we were finishing up the batter, Bryce woke up to join us. He loved watching the muffins rise as he cuddled with his blankie on the kitchen floor. It's funny because I can remember doing something similar as a child as well.
Yummy!
